['baɪət], Antonia Susan, englische Schriftstellerin, * Sheffield 24. 8. 1936; Schwester von Margaret Drabble. In ihren Romanen verbindet sie realistische Darstellung zunehmend mit symbolischen, mythologischen und literarischen Anspielungen. Nach dem konventionellen Bildungsroman »Shadow of a sun. A novel« (1964) verknüpft Byatt in »The game. A novel« (1967) den Konflikt zweier Schwestern mit Anspielungen auf den Garten Eden sowie auf die Geschwister Brontë. Der erste Teil einer geplanten Tetralogie über die Zeit seit der Krönung Elisabeths II., der Roman »The virgin in the garden« (1978), verweist auf einer zweiten Ebene auf das Zeitalter Elisabeths I. (Fortsetzung: »Still life«, 1985). In dem Roman »Possession« (1990; deutsch »Besessen«) ist Gegenwartsbewusstsein auf fiktive Texte des 19. Jahrhunderts bezogen. Byatt verfasste auch literaturkritische Arbeiten.
